Murchison falls national park is Uganda’s largest national park covering 3840 sq km of savanna, woodland, river/wetland and tropical forest vegetation.This protected area enjoys even a larger area of (5,072km2) which includes the adjoining Karuma and Bugungu wildlife reserves. Murchison falls is found In the northwest of Uganda, approximately 90km from Masindi Town. The Park is named after the magnificent falls on the world’s longest river Nile.
The Albert Nile corridor is Uganda’s lowest area (612m )at Delta Point and temperatures can be high with a mean maximum of 29°C. The hottest seasons come in December-February and June-July, and the rains in April and November.
Murchison falls is home to a diversity of flora and fauna which consists of 76 mammal species and 450 bird species. A mong these are lions, Antelopes, leopard, elephants, hippopotamus, Rothschild’s giraffe, Cape buffalo, hartebeest, oribi, warthog, and the famousUganda kob. This is also habitat to a number of primate species Chimpanzees inclusive, Plant life is also in abundance in this park.
Activities that can be enjoyed in Murchison Falls National park include Sport fishing, Game watching, launch cruises, bird watching, Chimpanzee tracking among others.
This national park can be accessed by road from Kampala using public transport with an over stay in Masindi or organized (private) transport by a tour operator.
The journey will take 5 hours from Kampala (305km) with a ferry crossing at Paraa on schedule. Alternatively a charter plane can be used to a near by Pakuba Airfield.
Accommodation in the park is provided by lodges situated in the park like Sambiya River Lodge, Red chili Safari Camps, Paraa Safari Lodge and other accommodation units in Masindi town.
