hipposPolice and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) have shot dead one of the hippopotamuses that killed two people and cows in Munyonyo on Lake Victoria shores.
Wildlife authority officials shot the hippopotamus dead on Sunday after a two-day hunt. It allegedly killed Peter Lugo, 25, a fisherman, and his brother, Lazarus Muko, 20.

The Kabalagala police commander, Mr Robert Walugembe, confirmed the killing of the hippopotamus.“It was killed by the UWA officials in Kawuku. So the situation has normalised but people should learn to co-exist with these animals,” Mr Walugembe said yesterday.

Fishermen and residents are still in a state of fear that other two hippopotamuses that are still at large may attack them in future.
They want them either to be killed or relocated to national parks.
Mr Walugembe said claims that there are other hippopotamuses still roaming in the area have not yet been confirmed.

“We have talked to the people who claim to have seen them but no one has told us that they saw a school of them,” Mr Walugembe said. It is alleged that the school of hippopotamus was brought by investors in Munyonyo to boost their business by attracting tourists but police deny the claim.

The Metropolitan police deputy spokesperson, Mr Henry Kalulu, said: “There are rumours from the public that the hippopotamuses belong to someone but as you know investigations depend on facts. We can not as of now suspect anyone until we have got substantive facts.”
